What is a Super Group?
A Super Group is a new way of grouping objects, which Fuga introduced to provide some additional features over traditional InDesign groups.
Super Group Features
Maintaining Layers
When working with a Super Group, objects can stay on separate layers. This means you can have a separate layer for images and text, while still having them grouped.
Resizing Options
When working with a Super Group you can specify how objects within the Super Group react when resized. For each object in the Super Group, you can specify on which sides it should maintain its margins in respect to the Super Group, and if the object should have a fixed size or scale vertically, horizontally or both.
Working with Super Groups
Super Groups behave similarly to other objects and normal groups in that you can select them, duplicate them, and generally manipulate them using most InDesign tools. In addition, special options for Super Groups are found in the Fuga Object panel, and in the InDesign Object menu.

The Fuga Object panel, with it's panel menu opened. Different options for this menu are enabled based on what's selected. This panel is found in the InDesign menu by going to Window > Fuga Object.
How to Create a Super Group Outside the Flow
To create a Super Group:
- Select all the objects you would like inside the Super Group.
- Do either of the following:
- From the InDesign menu, go to Object > Create Super Group.
- On the Fuga Object Panel, click the Panel Menu in the uppermost right corner and select Create Super Group.
How to Select a Super Group
To select a super group either:
- Move your mouse over the Super Group border until a dashed line appears, indicating that you’re directly over the border.
- Single click on the dashed line to select the Super Group.
Or
- Click the diamond in the top left corner of the Super Group.
For additional ease in selecting Super Groups, we recommend that the Super Groups are created on their own layer, separate from the objects they contain.
How to Name a Super Group
To name a super group:
- Open the Fuga Object panel if it isn’t already by going to Window > Fuga Object.
- In the top of the Fuga Object panel, replace the Super Group’s default name with your desired name. Each Super Group must have a name that is unique to that document.
How to Add Objects to a Super Group
To add additional objects to the Super Group after it’s been created:
- Select the object or objects you wish to add to the Super Group.
- In the Fuga Object panel you can either:
- Select the Super Group name to add the object to from the Parent drop-down menu under the Name field.
- If the object shares space with the Super Group, select Add to Overlapping Super Group from the Object Panel menu. If multiple Super Groups share space with the object, the object is added to the one it shares the most with.
The Super Group does not resize to enclose the objects, however they are recognized as part of the Super Group.
How to Resize a Super Group to Its Children
To resize a Super Group to enclose it’s children (without resizing its children):
- From the Object Panel Menu or the InDesign Object Menu select Resize Super Group To Children’s Bounding Box.
How to Remove Objects from a Super Group
To remove the selected object or objects from the Super Group you can either:
- Change their parent to No Parent using the Parent drop-down menu in the Fuga Object panel.
or
- From the InDesign Object menu or from the Object Panel menu select Remove Object from Super Group.
How to Delete a Super Group
- Select the Super Group.
- To delete the super group but not it’s contents, select Object > Remove All Objects from Super Group.
- Press Delete.
Resizing Options for Objects within a Super Group

An object's resizing options setup to maintain the object's top, bottom, and left margins when the Super Group is resized, and to lock the object's horizontal scaling (so the object will only be able to scale vertically).
To adjust the way an object reacts when a Super Group is resized, use the lower part of the Fuga Object panel. The buttons around the edges of the box represent the margins that object should maintain, and the inner button represents how the object should scale. Each time you click the inner button it rotates between options to lock vertical scaling, horizontal scaling, both, or neither.
Super Groups inside a Flow
You have many of the same options for controlling a Super Group inside the flow as from outside the flow. You can use actions to select, duplicate, resize, and move Super Groups the same way you would any other object. In addition, there are some special actions for working with Super Groups, like the Add to SG, Remove from SG and Create SG actions (SG standing for Super Group). You can also import Super Groups from other documents using the Import action.
